This Saturday marks the first time in 45 years that the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. will host a Traditional Latin Mass, in honor of Papa Benedetto’s Fifth Anniversary as Christ’s vicar. 1 p.m. Eastern, folks. Be there or be square.
The National Catholic Fishwrapper has covered this story recently with a zeal normally reserved for Joan Chittister’s speeches, or one of Pfleger’s homilies, because Dario Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos was the scheduled celebrant. And as Thomas C. Fox notes, His Eminence “reportedly has stepped aside following reports he shielded a known French pedophile priest from the law.”
Well, no, Thomas, he stepped aside because SNAP and others were organizing protests outside the Shrine. He didn’t “shield” anyone from justice, he praised Bishop Pican for upholding the Confessional Seal in civil court. Father Bissey, the pedophile, was sentenced to 18 years’ prison in 1999. Justice was served despite Bp. Pican’s refusal to disgrace the Sacrament.
Hoyos’ replacement is yet to be announced, but Paulus’ official website of the event will undoubtedly be the first with the news.
